The Content of the Presentations

presentation by Dave Glaze

Over the past 15 years, I have given readings to thousands of students in schools and libraries across Saskatchewan and other parts of Canada. I have also given presentations at conferences and festivals.

My most recent book is Danger in Dead Man’s Mine, written primarily for children in grades 4 to 7. This story takes place in the coal-mining centre of Lethbridge in the year 1912. When my presentation is focused on this book, I often begin by reading a few short passages from the novel to establish its setting and introduce some of the characters. In order to make the connection between fiction and real history, I bring along artefacts that are mentioned in the story. These artefacts could include a Wolf safety lamp and articles of clothing from that period and maybe a few lumps of coal. As part of the presentation, I can also talk to the students about aspects of story writing like creating characters and using research to make a story believable. A session like this usually lasts about one hour. I ensure there is time for the students to ask questions before the end.

I have a presentation focused on grades 3 to 5, as well. This one is based on the novel, Pelly, in which a girl befriends a young pelican and then becomes responsible for the bird’s survival. For this reading, I bring along a couple of pelican puppets. I include a discussion of getting story ideas and I use a “draw-and-tell” technique. With time for questions, this presentation also lasts about one hour.

I have had nothing but rave reviews.  My daughter asked me to get your books because she thought she would really like them because she really liked you! She talked enthusiastically about the puppets...The teachers thought you spoke at the students' level and did a wonderful job.     Parent, Aberdeen, SK
